We all have giants to slay in our lives. Things that loom large and seem insurmountable. Things that we’d prefer just to turn away from, ignoring that inner knowing telling us they offer gifts. Those giants are just sentinels waiting by doors to new adventures.
Last night I stepped out to meet one of my giants: sharing my work with others in face-to-face real time. I’ve been rereading Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way and this week is all about recovering my sense of power. For me, that includes owning my artistic passions and letting them be seen by the world. No easy feat for me, who has struggled with feeling like a poser when it comes to my writing. I’m working on kindness for myself there.
So last night I stepped out of my comfort zone and went to a poetry group in my town. Showed up unannounced (it’s open to all, the notice in my library said, so it’s not like I was crashing a private party) and was met with such generosity of spirit that I’m still floating today. I didn’t have the rules down - didn’t know, for example, that I was to have brought enough copies of the poem I’d written for everyone to hold. But I did bring a poem and I did share it out loud and I was wrapped in words written by others who share my passion and I was fed.
I conquered a giant last night. Turns out it was a pretty friendly one and she was holding a door wide open.
